Three Passes Trek Uttarakhand
Gangotri Three Passes Trek Itinerary (13 Days)
Day 1: Drive from Dehradun to Gangotri
Distance: ~240 km
Duration: 8-10 hours
Altitude: Gangotri at 3,100 m (10,170 ft)
Drive from Dehradun to Gangotri via Uttarkashi. Check into a guesthouse, visit the Gangotri Temple, and rest to acclimatize.
Day 2: Trek from Gangotri to Bhoj Kharak
Distance: 8 km
Duration: 4-5 hours
Altitude: Bhoj Kharak at 3,780 m (12,400 ft)
Start the trek along the Kedartal trail, crossing forests of pine and bhojpatra. Navigate the steep "Spider Wall" section and camp at Bhoj Kharak, a meadow with early mountain views.
Day 3: Trek from Bhoj Kharak to Kedar Kharak
Distance: 4-5 km
Duration: 3-4 hours
Altitude: Kedar Kharak at 4,270 m (14,000 ft)
Ascend through meadows and rocky patches with views of Bhrigupanth and Thalaysagar. Camp at Kedar Kharak for acclimatization.
Day 4: Trek from Kedar Kharak to Patangani Dhar Base Camp
Distance: 3-4 km
Duration: 2-3 hours
Altitude: Patangani Dhar Base Camp at ~4,540 m (14,900 ft)
A short, steep climb to the base of Patangani Dhar near the Kedar Bamak Glacier. Rest and prepare for the pass crossing.
Day 5: Cross Patangani Dhar to Rudugaira Base Camp
Distance: 6-7 km
Duration: 6-7 hours
Altitude: Patangani Dhar at 5,100 m (16,732 ft), Rudugaira Base Camp at 4,350 m (14,270 ft)
Start early to ascend the steep Patangani Dhar pass (often snowy or scree-laden). Enjoy panoramic views before descending into the Rudugaira Valley. Camp at Rudugaira Base Camp.
Day 6: Trek from Rudugaira Base Camp to Auden’s Col Base Camp (Gangotri Side)
Distance: 7-8 km
Duration: 5-6 hours
Altitude: Auden’s Col Base Camp at ~4,900 m (16,076 ft)
Trek across moraines and glacial terrain toward the base of Auden’s Col on the Gangotri side. The route follows the Rudugaira Glacier. Camp near the glacier with towering peaks around.
Day 7: Cross Auden’s Col to Khatling Glacier Base Camp
Distance: 6-8 km
Duration: 8-10 hours
Altitude: Auden’s Col at 5,490 m (18,012 ft), Khatling Base Camp at ~4,800 m (15,750 ft)
The toughest day. Start pre-dawn to cross Auden’s Col, a technical pass with crevasses and steep snow slopes (ropes and crampons often required). Descend cautiously onto the vast Khatling Glacier and camp at its base. This is a long, exhausting day.
Day 8: Trek from Khatling Glacier Base Camp to Zero Point (Khatling Glacier)
Distance: 5-6 km
Duration: 4-5 hours
Altitude: Zero Point at ~4,600 m (15,092 ft)
Traverse the Khatling Glacier, navigating crevasses and moraines. Reach Zero Point, a scenic campsite surrounded by rugged glacial landscapes. Rest and recover.
Day 9: Trek from Zero Point to Mayali Pass Base Camp
Distance: 6-7 km
Duration: 5-6 hours
Altitude: Mayali Pass Base Camp at ~4,800 m (15,750 ft)
Continue along the Khatling Glacier and ascend toward the base of Mayali Pass. The trail involves rocky and snowy sections. Camp with views of the pass ahead.
Day 10: Cross Mayali Pass to Masar Tal
Distance: 7-8 km
Duration: 7-8 hours
Altitude: Mayali Pass at 5,300 m (17,388 ft), Masar Tal at 4,500 m (14,764 ft)
Start early to ascend Mayali Pass, a steep climb with snowfields. Reach the top for breathtaking views of Thalaysagar and other peaks. Descend to the serene Masar Tal lake and camp by its shores.
Day 11: Trek from Masar Tal to Vasuki Tal
Distance: 8-10 km
Duration: 5-6 hours
Altitude: Vasuki Tal at 4,300 m (14,108 ft)
Trek through meadows and rocky trails to Vasuki Tal, a sacred lake with views of Mt. Mandakini. This is a relatively easier day to recover from the pass crossings.
Day 12: Trek from Vasuki Tal to Kedarnath
Distance: 12-14 km
Duration: 6-7 hours
Altitude: Kedarnath at 3,583 m (11,755 ft)
Descend through alpine meadows and forests to Kedarnath, a holy town with the famous Kedarnath Temple. Check into a guesthouse and rest.
Day 13: Drive from Kedarnath to Hrishikesh
Distance: ~220 km (via Gaurikund)
Duration: 9-13 hours (4 hr trek to Gaurikund + drive)
Trek 14-16 km downhill to Gaurikund (or hire a mule/porter), then drive back to Hrishikesh via Rudraprayag, arriving by evening.
